The Dawn of American Freedom 1634 - 1934

A bronze bas relief executed by Louis Rosenthal in 1934 in commemoration of Maryland's 330th anniversary.  It depicts a youth holding a proclamation of freedom in his right hand and brushing away the clouds of bigotry with his left.  Commissioned by the management of the Rex Theatre, a bronze cast of it will be placed in the theatre and another cast in bronze or in the ceramic method developed by Mr. Rosenthal has been offered for a historical Maryland shrine.  In 1964 in honor of the State's 330th anniversary, The Dawn of American Freedom has been donated to the Baltimore Hebrew College by Louis E. The Roosevelt Plaque for the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis
   -   The emblem of The National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis.  1941
   -   At the base of the plaque are two dolphins representing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans portraying the extent of our activities for the relief of suffering.  In the center of the composition an eagle turning the pages of a book represents the American people and the book itself symbolizes American history.  The children look up at a base relief of President Roosevelt, view him as a symbol of encouragement since he, like they, overcame infantile paralysis.  One of the children holds a broken crutch no longer needed as a result of the Foundation's work.  A male figure represents Medicine and a female figure with a cornucopia identifies the abundance of the country's resources - health, happiness and prosperity.  Out of the clouds at the top of the plaque, arises a hand bearing a torch, symbolizing Hope".   - (reprinted from National Foundation News, February, 1942)
   -   "Nothing is closer to my heart than the health of our boys and girls and young men and young women, to me it is one of the front lines of our national defense".
