I saw U2 for the first time in 1982.  I have seen them in concert 7 times.  There must be over 1,000 videos of U2 to choose from.  But in this 1980’s video of U2’s “I Will Follow” video (below), I don’t think even Bono realized the magnitude of the lyric he wrote at the time.  Wow!  If you walk away, I will follow....
And (below) 2001’s “Beautiful Day” live from Slane Castle, Ireland.  “And the reason that you had to care....the traffic is stuck….and you're not moving anywhere”.  Achtung Baby!  As always, thank you Bono!
“Where the Streets Have No Name” - from U2’s 1987 Grammy award winning best album of the year, The Joshua Tree.  The song, often used to open concerts, over the years has become a centerpiece at U2’s concerts.  Open to interpretation to all who listen, it has been said that Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on which side of the street they live on, particularly in Belfast.  It has also been said that Bono wrote the lyrics in response to his visits to Ethiopia, where many of his songs were rooted.  Many countries claim the song as their own.  Many individuals too.  The beauty of music.  The reach of lyrics.  After 9/11 the song never sounded more needed.
                                                                                      Thanks Bono.

And it's you when I don't pick up the phone

I know that we don't talk
                                                                                      I'm sick of it all
                                                                                      Can - you - hear - me - when - I -
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me

                                                                                      Well hey now
I've got to let you know
                                                                                      A house still doesn't make a home
                                                                                      Don't leave me here alone...

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
                                                                                      Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
                                                                                      Well, hey now.

So, I created this page so I could post a few favorites.  However, casual listening to U2 is just not possible.  Continuously, there is always one more song to add.  I also have to face the fact that emphasizing just one lyrical quote just does not cut it.  Not from a band that spans over 30 years and is still going strong.  Not from a band who won not only 22 Grammy Awards, but multiple wins and nominations for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for 1987 - The Joshua Tree;  1991 - Achtung Baby;  2001 - All That You Can’t Leave Behind;  2004 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.  In fact, quoting one line from one lyric simply opens a very big door.  Of course now I am posting the entire lyric.

And of course I have to mention their first album: “Boy”  “Into the heart of a child I stay awhile.” - I’m back to those one lines!  In some ways, “Boy,” although it gives us Bono just beginning to explore his lyrical ideas, will always be one of the best U2 albums.  It’s like a toddler taking his first steps with the whole world in front of him.  Not literally though.  Literally, it’s about that year, month, day, and minute in time when a boy wakes up and discovers childhood is over. “Bright morning lights, wipe the sleep, from another day's eye, turn away from the wall and there's nothing at all, being naked and afraid, in the open space of my bed.”

                                                                                      http://www.u2.com/news/title/melody-maker-4-october-80/disc_review_boy/

How perfect that U2 who have reached the heights they have to have also called their first album “Boy.”

To many; myself included, “The Joshua Tree” is their best.  The funny thing is I am so busy listening to everything else they do, I hardly listen to the Joshua Tree.

And of course 1984’s “The Unforgettable Fire” was special; can’t leave that out.  The Unforgettable Fire sounds best when you have not heard it for awhile.  It is a multi-layered visual musical landscape, taking our senses and externally expanding over mountains and hills while internally reaching and locating our soul.

Nor can I leave out the mention of “Tomorrow” from 1981’s October.

That brings me to “Rattle & Hum”, legendary in its time, and right!

This all brings me back to 1983 when I spent many, many days driving the Jersey Turnpike from Baltimore to New York City.  What I remember most was a radio station in New Jersey.  I could not get on and off the Jersey Turnpike without hearing “New Year’s Day” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” at least twice; coming and going to New York.  Of course those are from the “War” album.

And I still did not mention 1993’s “Zooropa,” 1997’s “Pop,” or 2009’s “No Line on the Horizon.”

                                                                                      http://ww.u2.com/

Gee, I just wanted to have a little U2 page.  Not so simple.

                                                                                      I’m sure I will be adding more….
                                                                                      U2 & Bruce Springsteen - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

Oh my gosh….don’t even get me started on Bono’s speech writing or I will have to create a new website.  This 1994 introduction he wrote for Frank Sinatra suggested the possibility of future passionate speeches to follow.  Bono admitted to a few Guinness’s while creating this piece.  He may also have had a few (he is Irish after all) while on stage.  However, he nailed it!  Sinatra claimed ‘that was the best welcome he ever had.’  Keep writing Bono!

I wanted to go back and find a good video from U2’s early days; something from 1980 or 1981 or even 1978.  But I came across this: over 18 million hits on YouTube.  Well, it’s going next in my little list of U2 videos.

                                                                                      Great hair, Bono!

I, I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet.
I, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete.

                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      In te domine
                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      Exultate
                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      Oh, Lord, loosen my lips.

I try to sing this song
I, I try to get in
But I can't find the door
                                                                                      The door is open
You're standing there, you let me in.

                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      In te domine
                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      Exultate
Oh, Lord, if I had anything, anything at all
                                                                                      I'd give it to you.

                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      In te domine
                                                                                      Gloria
                                                                                      Gloria

New Years Day (September, 2001) a week after the death of Bono's father.  Live from Slane Castle, Ireland  Click on Blue Link for a larger video image:  http://youtu.be/ZqeRwGnnVBo

                                                                                      And we can break through
                                                                                      Though torn in two
                                                                                      We can be one.

                                                                                      I will begin again

Grace 2001 (Bono - quite the prolific, gifted, skilled and talented songwriter)

                                                                                      Bono's Speeches

                                                                                      National Prayer Breakfast Speech

                                                                                      Harvard University Speech

Larry King Interview: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6

Priceless!  U2's first interview in the U.S. on the "Tomorrow" Show with Tom Snyder.  1981.  They perform the song "I Will Follow" and sit right down for the interview.  A very, very young Bono reminding Tom Snyder they are from Ireland...not the U.K!  Bono - so young, so naive, how did he get so smart???

If you walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I will follow.
                                                                                      I will follow.

                                                                                      Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
                                                                                      Your eyes, your eyes
                                                                                      Your eyes, your eyes.

If you walk away, walk away

                                                                                      I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I will follow.

                                                                                      You needed me
                                                                                      I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see.

A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by the hand
If he stops to think, he starts to cry
                                                                                      Oh why?

If you walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I walk away, walk away
                                                                                      I will follow.
                                                                                      I will follow.

                                                                                      I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found.

LIVE AID....need I say more.  I was already a U2 fan, as were many in the audience, but when U2 performed at Live Aid in 1985 - the entire world was watching and not just at Wembley Stadium in London, but at home on their television sets....U2 entered everyone's home up close and personal and in doing so the band reached extraordinary heights!

Yet, extra-extraordinary heights were yet to come as 1987's The Joshua Tree album put U2 on the cover of Time Magazine, won the Grammy Award for Best Album of the Year, explored the duality of America, and thrusted U2 to a height that at the time even the band members were uncomfortable with.

So, a few years later, when you are at the very top (and in this case the spiritual mountain top) the only place to go is down....right?  Wrong.  U2 just jumped from one mountain top to a completely different mountain top when they released Achtung Baby which also won the Grammy for Album of the Year.  Bravo!  And what an album it was!  At the time the band members said that Achtung Baby was 'the sound of 4 men chopping down the Joshua Tree' which really revealed the discomfort they felt as people worldwide turned to them for ...well, just about everything.  In fact, in one biography it was reported that their was a child missing in Seattle.  And someone said, 'call Bono'.  Another person said, 'are you crazy, what do you mean, call Bono?  Bono is in Dublin.'  But that it how it was.  When a problem arose, didn't matter where, what or whom, the unconscious response was 'to call Bono.'

Time has passed.  And although The Joshua Tree will always be their best, their 2001 album, 'And All That You Can't Leave Behind' is my personal favorite.  But then again, so is "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" from 2005.

People still call Bono, but not really.  Instead they just expect him to show up.  And he does, like he did on 9/11.  Bono responded on 9/11.  The world looked for U2 on September 11, 2001 and they were there.   I wish I was at that concert at Madison Square Garden in 2001.

By the way, all the videos are from YouTube and you can go directly to YouTube to access them in 'full screen'.  A larger image makes a huge difference in the performance.

I was speeding on the subway
Through the stations of the cross
